Game Critics Awards Winner
Rockband, which took the gaming world by storm in late 2007, was followed by the highly-anticipated sequel, Rockband 2 that was released in September of 2008. With Rockband 2 came Ion's Drum Rocker Set, which quickly took the Game Critics Awards top spot in 2008's Best Peripheral/Hardware category.

Professional-Grade Aluminum Rack and Pads
While other drum controllers force you to use their configuration with a pre-molded, plastic array, the Drum Rocker's professional-grade aluminum rack lets you position your snare, tom and cymbal pads the way you want. Not only can you play your hi-hat with a right-hand crossover by placing your cymbals anywhere around your kit, but by mounting your pads to the drum rack with the included metal L-arm and clamp system, you can tilt, swivel, raise and lower the cymbals to whatever position you want.

Drum Rocker's velocity-sensitive drum pads feature an ultra-quiet playing surface and a more natural and consistent stick rebound than your average pad. The pad housing is made of a hi-impact plastic, which means that no matter how much you punish them night after night, they will always be ready for more.

The Drum Rocker's all-metal kick drum pedal is also designed to take abuse. It offers the perfect amount of tension to replicate the feeling of a real drum pedal. And keeping in line with its set-up flexibility, the kick drum pedal comes with Velcro and retractable spikes, allowing you to place it in the most comfortable position.

Go Beyond Gaming into Real Music
Built by the engineers at Alesis, one of the largest manufacturers of professional electronic drums in the world, the Drum Rocker Premium Drum Set delivers the most realistic drumming experience available to a gamer.

But when you're ready to move from playing the game to playing in a real life, you can swap the game controller module with one of the professional drum brains made by Alesis, such as their DM5 drum module, or any other drum brain that accepts a quarter-inch output. (Drum modules are sold separately.) And with the option of purchasing a third cymbal, you can round out your kit and move beyond gaming and onto the stage.

The Drum Rocker Premium Drum Set is compatible with both Rockband and Rockband 2 for the PlayStation 3.

The Drum Rocker comes with cymbals, kick pedal, and drum pads.

Aluminum drum rack, 4 drum pads, 2 cymbals, drum pedal, all mounting hardware and connecting cords, and 2 drumsticks.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you hoped for and more!   January 1, 2009
I have been playing drums on Rock Band 1 and 2 for about 6 months now (all songs on Hard, some on Expert), never having picked up a drum stick before then, and I love it! So when my poor little RB1 Playstation 2 kit literally started to break down, I figured it was time to upgrade. So since the other reviewers did such a great job in reviewing the kit, I decided to answer questions that I had before I bought this kit:

1. Is it worth the money?
Absolutely! The solid, quality construction is that of a real musical instrument and not a toy, all metal support bars. And as you've probably read in the description, the PS3 module can be swapped out for a professional drum module if you want to take your playing off the game.

2. Will the transition be difficult from the original Rock Band drum set?
It's a little awkward, because you're so used to playing on this tiny toy, but that doesn't last long. The feel of the drum pads is fantastic! If you thought that maybe your playing wasn't improving, especially on faster drum rolls, you might be wrong, your old kit might just be dropping notes. I found I was actually a better player when I had a better instrument. :) Another note on the drum pads--I went to a professional music store and played some on the electronic drums they had there, I was amazed at the bounce I'd get when I'd hit those pads, compared to the old RB set, and it's the same feel with the Ion kit!

3. Will this drum pedal be better than the orignal RB drum pedal?
Like a pedal could be any worse than that one, but honestly, it's a great pedal. Very solid metal parts with a metal spring, no plastic on this baby. My only complaint is that it's LOUD, the sound best described as "clackety"--literally the sound of metal hitting metal with a metal spring in between. And even if you have carpet floors, you'll have to figure out a way to secure the pedal because it will move as you're playing. But both of those issues are totally fixable, I've seen other user comments in the Rock Band Forums on how they've fixed the issue.

4. Does it come with a better pair of sticks?
Actually when I read the description, either they did not mention sticks or I missed it, because I opted to go out and buy a real pair of Vic Firth sticks. The kit actually comes with what I can guess are 5A's based on the comparison to the 5AN Extreme Vic Firth's I bought. They are much better quality than the original sticks, but I would say, go to a music store and find a good quality pair of sticks that fit you well and spend the $6-8. It makes a big difference in your playing experience.

5. So how are the cymbals, really?
They are pretty darn cool! The only thing I noticed is that I had to hit them rather hard to get the note to register. Again, Rock Band Forum users have found an answer to this issue, it's a matter of "tuning" your cymbals. I haven't tried it yet, will report back then.

Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and would recommend this product to anyone who wants to take their drumming to the next level!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing   December 16, 2008
I got the drums around a week ago, but i only opened them today and let me say what a blast i had. These drums, don't just look great; they feel great, respond great and are a blast to use when playing rockband 2. The build quality is amazing, its quality built, made from strong durable material.. i am simply loving it. I have heard a lot of complaints about the Ion Pedal, all i can say is that the pedal is amazing, its very well built, made from great material and responds great, the sound it makes when you step on in, is much lower than the stock pedal that comes with rockband and it is also much more responsive. All in All this is a great product that I would recommend for anyone into drums out there. My second step is to get the pro-part and turn these drums into the real thing. Trust me, playing on these drums has changed the way i play the game and will change the way you play too.
PlayStation 3 Drum Rocker Premium Drum Set
Cheers

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awesome! Bravo!   December 14, 2008
I just received the Ion Drum Rocker for my PS3 on 12/11...which was a week earlier than I expected (the release date was noted on Amazon as 12/15)...so I was obviously ecstatic. It took me about an hour to set everything up, and I was ready to rock out. I was a drummer in my younger days...so needless to say the stock drum set that comes with Rockband I completely tore to shreds. This drum set however is everything the stock set isn't. Durable, well put together, quiet and fully adjustable to your needs. I can't even describe the level of gameplay I'm now able to experience...it's like starting all over again. But in a good way.

Pros:

- The drum pads have a very impressive rebound and are very quiet.
- The module (where all your cords plug into) can be mounted above or below your drums. (I chose above, which isn't what you see in most pictures)
- There are separate inputs for a yellow, blue or a green cymbal. On drum fills and on freestyle mode, it DOES know if you're hitting a blue pad or a blue cymbal, and it gives you the appropriate sound. I had never heard the sound of a yellow tom or a blue ride in Rock band before now. Your fills now sound like you're actually playing a drum set, with 7 distinct sounds. (not including the bass drum)
- The Ion Drum Rocker is very sturdy. No longer am I playing cheap drums that creep forward and aren't able to handle a walloping.
- All the drum heads are fully customizable as far as positioning. You can tilt, angle, position them above the bars or below. My green tom is positioned lower than the others and relatively flat.
- The cymbals are fully adjustable as well...tilt them towards you or away, high or low...or move any cymbal to any location on the set.
- You can even purchase additional cymbals if you desire, and with a "Y" adapter, you can add an additional pad/cymbal of the same color. For example: Adding a 2nd green cymbal to the left, as well as the right. This definitely comes in handy for the hard stuff. Metallica anyone?
- The drum rocker is still relatively compact, regardless of what others are saying. Yes, compared to the stock set, it's definitely wider. But at least you can adjust the arms inward if you want to store it in the corner of a room.
- You can actually move this set across the room without the whole thing falling apart. (Yes, another knock on the old stock set.)
- These drums just look really, really cool. Be prepared to respond to "ooohs" and "aaahs" from your friends at parties.

Cons:

- Cymbals are a bit loud. Not really a problem when you're smashing the end of a fill...but as far as hi-hat functionality, it can be a bit distracting at times. Not too bad, just worth mentioning.
- The PS3 button doesn't light up. No idea why. I've read others having the same issue. It serves no purpose however so it's really not much of an issue.
- The drum pedal...yikes. They deliver such a beautiful, quality drum set...and give you this god-awful pedal that sounds like you're laying carpet. No rebound or really any sort of resistance, which is what you need if you're trying to succeed in fast bass hits. I bought a pedal from [...] for $75 and it's amazing. It's built from an actual drum pedal and it's makes a world of a difference. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

All in all, this set is WELL worth the money. You actually feel like you're playing drums with your favorite bands now, instead of trying to play an entire drum set on 4 little compact pads that wouldn't even resemble drums with your eyes closed.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!   December 13, 2008

In a nutshell, this is a fantastic electronic drum kit for Rock Band. It's worth picking up if you have skill and the drums and want to advance to the next level.

Some notes before starting out:
- When I compare the Ion Drum Rocker to the standard Rock Band kit, I am referring to the original R.B. drum kit, not the R.B.2 kit
- I have the Rock Pedal (which works for this kit with a simple 1/8 to 1/4 adapter) and will not discuss the pedal that comes with this kit (though it seems more responsive than the standard pedal)
- I have been a "Rock Band drummer" for about 10 months, and can play roughly 75% of the songs on Expert

Let me explain some specifics about this kit via a pros/cons list:

PROS
1) Drum pad placement. Lots of flexibility to move drums pads around--change the angle, height, and placement on the bar. You can set the four pads to wherever is most comfortable for you. The L-shaped rod under each pad gives you some flexibility in height.
2) Noise reduction. The drum pads are much quieter than the standard Rock Band kit. (There are some YouTube videos that demonstrate this, and it is a noticeable difference.)
3) Sensitive pads. The drum pads are velocity sensitive and also have more 'bounce' to them than the standard kit.
4) Easy adjustments. The kit comes with a drum key (an allen wrench, really) that lets you make every adjustment that needs to be made.
5) Cymbals. Come on, you really want this to have the cymbals, right? :> The cymbals are also quiet and really add to your enjoyment when playing. It also makes you focus more closely on what's going on in the music (not just blinding hitting the blue pad without noticing whether you're hitting a tom or a ride cymbal).

CONS
1) Cymbal placement. Well, it's okay, but you're a bit more limited when it comes to placement and angle. The kit comes with a short (~12") bar and a longer (~24"-30") bar, so you have some flexibility in height. The drums give you more freedom of placement.
2) Ships with two cymbals. You can order the third for $50, though.
3) No option for a fourth, or "red" cymbal. Some songs ("Run to the Hills" or "Rio" amongst others) have you hit the red pad as a cymbal, but there's no option to plug a cymbal into a "red" input. Not a huge problem, just a tad annoying (I'm actually more annoyed at the RB programmers for ever turning the red snare drum into a cymbal!).
4) Bigger/Bulkier than the original RB kit. Or maybe this is a con. :> It's not too much bigger, but it is heavier and a little trickier to move.

As a sidenote, I have not had any problems with the cymbals dropping 'fast' notes (mine are set to Ride/Blue and Crash/Green currently, so I haven't tried the Hi-Hat/Yellow).

Overall, the pros vastly outweigh the cons. These seem to be very high-quality drums, and it adds to the challenge of drumming when you have to differentiate between cymbals and toms when you're playing! If you are really into Rock Band drumming, I highly recommend this kit.

5 out of 5 stars How much fun is this thing??   December 12, 2008

I ordered these on December 9th (in the evening) and thanks to a free trial of Amazon Prime, I got it shipped next day for just $3.99. Anyway I received them today and......WOW!!!! This peripheral single-handedly has made Rock Band FUN again!!! It's a completely different experience than the standard drum kit. The symbols add a level of realism that could not come close to being achieved with the standard kit. There is a learning curve, as the symbols will confuse you at times (when to hit them vs when to use the regular pads,) but it's fun figuring it out! The kick pedal is very good (way better than the one that comes with Rock Band and Rock Band 2, but not as good as the Omega Pedal.) It does take a while, took me about 30 minutes, to set up out of the box. There are wires going everywhere, one from each drum pad/symbol, to a central hub but you can zip-tie the cords up so it doesn't look like a rats nest. The kit can be set up to your liking as all the drum pads and the symbols are move-able. The pads themselves are more quiet and give more "bounce" than the rock band kit as well. Over all this is a very good drum kit, I have been playing Rock Band for almost 1 year, got to the point where I could play about 1/2 of the 250+ songs on expert so I have put a lot of time in on the old kit. I love the Drum Rocker and am looking forward to hours and hours of fun using it!!! The BEST kit on the market for playing Rock Band/Guitar Hero World Tour!
